It was three years ago when Sony first launched their spatial display, which allowed creative professionals to work with 3D content without the need to use special glasses or VR headsets. While it may not be for everyone, we have a feeling folks who regularly deal with 3D visuals probably find it indispensable. As such, Sony’s making even more of them, this time in the form of the Sony ELF-SR2 Spatial Reality Display.
Designed for immersive and intuitive 3D experience, the device is essentially a large 4K monitor that’s somehow able to show pictures in spatial 3D, which should allow creative professionals to see easily preview their 3D projects on the fly. No need for goofy glasses, bulky headsets, or other contraptions – this thing lets you see proper 3D images in plain view.
The Sony ELF-SR2 Spatial Reality Display is a 27-inch screen with an integrated rear stand that holds it at a fixed 45-degree angle. No, you can’t change the position, as it’s essential to create the 3D effect, which, we’re going to be honest, looks pretty impressive. It’s a 4K display, too, so you get plenty of details on those pictures (2,840 x 2,160 pixels, to be exact), all while coming with 400 nits of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast, and a color temperature of 6500K. According to the outfit, it has a response time of 14 milliseconds, so it won’t just impress you with 3D, it will deliver smooth moving 3D images at that. It also boasts excellent color reproduction with 100 percent coverage for the Adobe RGB color gamut.
In order to create the 3D visuals, the device uses an LCD panel that’s been reinforced with micro-optical lenses on top of it that divide the onscreen visuals between the viewer’s left and right eyes. Onboard vision sensors actually track the viewer in real time, automatically adjusting the picture to compensate as the viewer moves, ensuring you can see the correct 3D image from any angle. Well, most angles anyway, since Sony claims it can work up to 25 degrees to either side, 20 degrees up, and 40 degrees down.
The Sony ELF-SR2 Spatial Reality Display is slated to come out in May, priced at $5,000.
